Chris Christie target of Obama dirt diggers

Chris Christie as United States Attorney

Chris Christie of New Jersey is already a target of Barack Obama’s dirt diggers—and he’s not even running. Yet.

Background on Chris Christie

Governor Chris Christie of New Jersey has said for over a year that he does not want to run for President.

Short of suicide, I don’t really know what I’d have to do to convince you people that I’m not running.

Christie is too busy being Governor, and attacking many of the “sacred cows” of liberal, and especially New Jersey, politics. He has made some enemies along the way, and doesn’t care. Once, columnist Tom Moran of The Star-Ledger (Newark, NJ) asked Christie whether his “confrontational tone” would help him get a budget passed. Christie sighed, and said,

Tom, you must be the thinnest-skinned guy in America[.]…If you think that was a confrontational tone, then you should…see me when I’m [really angry]!

Opposition research

Now the New York Post, Huliq.com, The Hill, New Jersey Newsroom, and Fox News all say that Barack Obama’s “opposition research” operatives have opened a file on Chris Christie and are trying to mine his quotes and gather other information that could embarrass him. (Though when Fox News looked into it, someone close to the Obama campaign denied that Obama’s campaign was doing it.)

What can anyone have on Chris Christie?

No one knows what sort of dirt anyone could dig up on Chris Christie that would interest a liberal. Though Christie has made no secret of not running for President, neither has he made a secret of his contempt for liberal interests. His veto messages are on public record. Whenever he gives a “town hall” meeting, someone is present to film it. He has fought the teachers’ union, the police unions, and other public-employee unions. He is seriously thinking of fighting New Jersey’s Supreme Court over the latest Abbott v. Burke school-funding case.

His career as US Attorney, and his campaign for Governor, were both almost as colorful as his term as Governor has been. He rocketed to fame by having a county executive (James W. Treffinger, R-Essex) hauled out of his office in handcuffs. In the summer of 2009, he prosecuted many top lieutenants of his predecessor and opponent, Jon S. Corzine. The 2009 governor’s race was one of the most savage on record. Obama’s supporters got involved in that, too. Corzine lost anyway.

Chris Christie’s reaction

Chris Christie is flattered. As well he might be: if you don’t make enemies, you’re not making a difference. But he still refuses to run for President. The Republican “establishment” will probably try to get him to run anyway, as all their other favored candidates drop out, one by one.
