Sen. Tommy Tuberville defends his comments on reparations: ‘Had nothing to do with race’

On Tuesday, Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) said he won’t apologize for his remark claiming Democrats support “reparation.” Tuberville said that his remarks “had nothing to do with race.”

“Crime has no color,” Tuberville said during an appearance Tuesday on Fox 10 in Mobile in response to the NAACP stating that his comments were racist.

“I’d apologize if I meant anything about race, but it wasn’t. Race has no color, reparation would have no color,” Tuberville said.

Tuberville originally said in Nevada earlier this month: “They want crime. They want crime because they want to take over what you got. They want to control what you have,” adding, “They want reparation because they think the people who do the crime are owed that. Bullshit!”

His comments drew sharp criticism from many who saw them as racist. However, Tuberville defended his comments, saying that they were about a poor justice system and dangerous neighborhoods, not race.

“The taxpayers deserve safe streets, safe neighborhoods, but my colleagues on the left for some reason won’t speak out against it,” Tuberville said. “Our justice system’s out of whack, we don’t put anybody in jail, we don’t hold anybody accountable, and the people of this country deserve safe streets and safe neighborhoods, and if we don’t get control of it it’s going to get worse.”

He also hit out at Democrats for the recent increase in fentanyl, “petty crime” and the condition of the southern border.

“We need to have people that go by law and order,” Tuberville said. “Everything had to do that came from me had to do with people doing the wrong things, breaking the law, but not being held accountable because of the actions of my Democratic colleagues.”

In last week’s interview with YellowHammer, Tuberville also hit out at the damage done during the summer 2020 protests following the death of George Floyd, as well as the riots that ensued.

“Antifa, Black Lives Matter, and rioters have caused over $2 billion in damage to our cities since 2020,” Tuberville said Monday. “Illegal immigrants and drugs are streaming across our southern border in record numbers. Progressive prosecutors across the nation refuse to enforce laws they personally disagree with, and our communities are suffering because of it.”

People constantly scream racism to avoid dealing with the real issues they create. And often is about making money. Consider this quote:

“There is a class of colored people who make a business of keeping the
troubles, the wrongs and the hardships of the Negro race before the
public. Having learned that they are able to make a living out of their
troubles, they have grown into the settled habit of advertising their
wrongs, partly because they want sympathy, and partly because it pays.
Some of these people do not want the Negro to lose his grievances,
because they do not want to lose their jobs. There is a certain class
of race-problem solvers who don’t want the patient to get well, because
as long as the disease holds out they have not only an easy means of
making a living, but also an easy medium through which to make themselves
prominent before the public.”
  — Booker T. Washington in his 1911 book, My Larger Education

And the quote, with a subject change, applies to all sorts of other things as well.
