A Morning Consult poll, which was released on Monday, polled registered Republican voters on whether the United States has a duty to assist Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia. Of those polled, 29% believed that the United States has an obligation to help Ukraine.

This number is lower than both Democrats and Independents who were asked the same question with 56% of Democrats and 38% of Independents stating that the United States has a responsibility to help Ukraine.

When asked about whether the United States should impose further sanctions on Russia, the Republican percentage was at the lowest number with 34% of registered Republicans saying that further restrictions should be imposed on Russia. In comparison, 52% of Democrats and 45% of Independents said they supported further sanctions on Russia.

Republicans were also found to be more likely to say the US government was doing “Too Much” to stop Russia’s invasion, rather than “Not Enough.”

20% of GOP voters said that the United States isn’t doing enough to stop Russia’s invasion, which is a drop from a 40% peak set in March, a matter of days after the war started. Some Republicans (29%) say America is doing “too much” to stop the invasion; however 36% plurality say the Biden administration is doing “the right amount.”

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) said during a recent interview that Republicans will not write “a blank check” to Kyiv if Republicans are successful in November’s midterms.

On the other said of the political aisle, a group of 30 House Democrats wrote to Biden, urging him to press harder for peace talks.

“Given the destruction created by this war for Ukraine and the world, as well as the risk of catastrophic escalation, we also believe it is in the interests of Ukraine, the United States and the world to avoid a prolonged conflict,” the 30 lawmakers wrote.

“For this reason, we urge you to pair the military and economic support the United States has provided to Ukraine with a proactive diplomatic push, redoubling efforts to seek a realistic framework for a ceasefire.”
