New York Post fires rogue employee who posted false reports containing explicitly racist, sexist headlines
The New York Post confirmed in a statement that a rogue employee, who has now been fired, was responsible for racist and sexist posts on both their website and Twitter account.
The posts included racist, violent, and sexually explicit headlines about Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Kathy Hochul and Eric Adams.
One post from the employee falsely reported that Lee Zeldin (R-NY) planned to sexually assault Kathy Hochul (D-NY). Zeldin was also falsely quoted of making a racist statement towards New York Mayor Eric Adams.
Another post quoted Texas Governor Greg Abbott as saying, “I will order Border Patrol to start slaughtering illegals,” and another post called for the assassination of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
The Press Gazette reported that the posts were removed shortly after they were put up and that both the website and the Twitter account, which has 2.8 million followers, were functioning as normal by mid morning.
“The New York Post’s investigation indicates that the unauthorized conduct was committed by an employee, and the employee has been terminated,” a spokesperson said Thursday. “This morning, we immediately removed the vile and reprehensible content from our website and social media accounts.”
The New York post also took to Twitter to confirm this. “The New York Post has been hacked. We are currently investigating the cause.”
Representatives for Kathy Hochul and Eric Adams demanded an explanation as to how these posts managed to be made public.
“The New York Post has long fostered an ugly, toxic conversation on their front pages and social accounts, but these posts are more disgusting and vile than usual,” a representative for Hochul said.
They added, “The New York Post needs to immediately explain how this reprehensible content was made public. While the Post has made its preferences very clear in the New York Governor’s race, there is no room for this violent, sexist rhetoric in our politics. We demand answers.”
Mayor Eric Adams’ press secretary said of the incident: “These vile, racist, and sexist comments have no place in public discourse, even by those unlawfully hacking a Twitter account.”
