Rep. Kevin McCarthy vows to investigate China if GOP takes House in midterms

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Ca.) pledged this week that if Republicans take control of the House in the upcoming midterm election, the GOP will launch an official investigation into China’s role in the origin of COVID-19 as well as other topics related to the Chinese government.

In an appearance on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures, McCarthy told host Maria Bartiromo that if the GOP fares well in the House of Representatives in the November 8 midterms, Republican leadership would immediately work to form a committee to formally investigate China’s role in the spread of the COVID-19 virus from Asia to the United States.

The committee would also look into possible economic threats posed by China, including the alleged theft of US intellectual property.

In addition to COVID and the economy, the panel would also investigate military threats from China and its possible attempts to dominate major industries, including buying up property in the United States.

McCarthy’s comments come just days after Senate Republicans released an interim report claiming the COVID-19 virus originated from a leak at a Wuhan-based lab. China’s government has repeatedly denied those allegations.

“We want to find where the origins of Covid began, so it never starts again,” MCCarthy said on Sunday. “How did that happen?”

With the midterm elections in just over a week, races across the country remain close, and control of both the United States House and Senate is on the line for both parties. With early voting already started in many states, voters across the country have been polled and repeatedly shown that inflation and the economy are top priority issues leading into the hotly-contested election.
