Much has been written about the recent Obama Administration scandal that centers on the IRS’ abuse of power. One of the most profound questions asked during the House Ways and Means Committee investigation was by Rep. Kevin Brady (R) of Texas who asked: “Is this still America?”

Brady followed up by asking:

Is this government so drunk on power that it would turn its full force, its full might, to harass, and intimidate, and threaten an average American who only wants her voice, their voices heard?

Unfortunately, this debacle may have served as a wake-up call for some in Congress, but those of us living in the real world have seen the handwriting on the wall for quite some time. We have been ridiculed and dismissed by many who should have been joining in our cause, but at last they are seeing the light now. Hopefully, it’s not too late.

Well, is this still America?

If we are inclined to answer Congressman Brady’s question, I think we first need to define what we mean by “America” and answer a few more questions before attempting to answer Congressman Brady’s question: “Is this still America?”

If, to you, America is nothing more than a land mass sitting between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, then Brady’s question would seem more than a little odd and your answer would be: “Yes. This is still America.” On the other hand, if you have always thought of America as being the home of the free and the brave, then you might consider answering the following before answering Brady’s question:

• If you believe that in this land we call “America” government is bound by the limits of our Constitution, then your answer would be: “No. This is not America.”
• If you believe that our elected representatives are accountable to We the People, then once again your answer would be: “No. This is not America.”
• If you believe that the basic premise of American government is to protect our right to life and you reflect on the government that birthed a monster like Dr. Gosnell, your answer would be: “No. This is not America.”
• If you believe that in America you have the right to enjoy the fruits of your own labor and to charitably share as you see fit, then your answer would be: “No. This is not America.”
• If you believe that in America we have the right of freedom of religion without government interference, then your answer would be “No. This is not America.”
• If you believe that in America only parents are responsible for the upbringing – culturally, spiritually and academically of their children – then your answer would be: “No. This is not America.”
• If you believe that Executive Orders cannot circumvent the Constitution in America, then your answer would be: “No. This is not America.”
• If you believe that in America your right to bear arms will not be infringed, then your answer would be: “No. This is not America.”
• If you believe that in America you have the right to free speech without intimidation, then your answer would be: “No. This is not America.”
• If you believe that in America we have a check and balance system where one branch of government keeps the other two branches accountable and in check, then your answer would be: “No. This is not America.”
• If you believe that in America the First Amendment protection to a free press has created a watchdog to serve American citizens, then your answer would be: “No. This is not America.”
• If you believe that in America you have the right to choose your own doctors and your own healthcare plan, then your answer would be: “No. This is not America.”
• If you believe that in America one political party will hold the others accountable, then your answer would be: “No. This is not America.”
• If you believe America is a sovereign nation and not subservient to any United Nation’s treaty, you might not be able to answer Congressman Brady’s question with any degree of certainty.
• If you believe that America was and is a Christian nation, then your answer might be conflicted as you think about the foundations of this nation and its current fixation with secular humanism.
• If you believe that in America the President of the United States must be a natural born citizen, again you might not be able to answer the question, or worse, you might be intimidated by your loss of free speech and not want to answer the question.

How to make it America again

Is this still America? It isn’t right now but it can be again. However, as it was in the beginning, is now. The Great American Experiment that protects our rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, cannot endure unless those who value this Experiment are ready, willing, and able to defend and fight to keep her. I am someone who values the Great American Experiment. Here’s the final question: Are you?
