Sen. Romney compares President Biden’s voting rights address to Trump’s election fraud claims
In a speech on the Senate floor on Tuesday, Republican Senator Mitt Romney (UT) compared President Biden’s voting rights address to former president Donald Trump’s claims that US elections are unfair.
Romney compared Biden’s stance on election fairness to the allegations made by the former president, saying, “And so, President Biden goes down the same tragic road taken by President Trump — casting doubt on the reliability of American elections.”
Romney’s remarks came after a speech by Biden in Atlanta this week that blasted Republican efforts to change voting laws across the country, and seemingly compared those who oppose this legislation to segregationists.
Romney specifically quoted the President as saying, “the goal of some Republicans is to turn the will of the voters into a mere suggestion.” He suggested Biden had not stuck to his word when it came to unity, telling the Senate, “This is a sad, sad day. I expected more of President Biden, who came into office with the stated goal of bringing the country together.”
Democrats have been pushing the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and the Freedom to Vote Act through the sharply divided Senate for several months, but have not been able to gain the votes needed.
