Ukrainian immigrant in NYC creates project to quickly donate money to Ukrainian families in need
A New York City venture capitalist who moved to the United States from Ukraine in the 1990s has created a new fundraising program called The 1K Project, which works to collect donations of $1,000 apiece and distribute the money to Ukrainian families who need assistance in the midst of the Russian invasion.
Alex Iskold organized The 1k Project as a way to get money into the hands of needy Ukrainian families as quickly as possible, and to make donating and distributing the funds easy and without a middleman.
By donating $1,000, one would be sponsoring a Ukrainian family. Iskold says the current focus is families with multiple children, particularly single mothers.
“If every one of us can touch the lives of just one family, we’ll make such a huge difference as a collective. When you type in the routing instructions and it’s received on the other end, you’ve literally helped save them,” Iskold said.
The program’s website claims over $2,100,000 has been donated to date, and more than 1,700 Ukrainian families have been helped.
