Florida man pleads guilty to sending death threats to Rep. Ilhan Omar in 2019

A Florida man has pleaded guilty to threatening Minnesota Democrat Rep. Ilhan Omar via email in 2019.

The man, 67 year old David Hannon, emailed Omar in 2019 after he became enraged by comments she made toward then-president Donald Trump in a televised news conference.

Omar, who is part of the so-called Squad, which includes Omar,  Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, Jamaal Bowman of New York and Cori Bush of Missouri. 

The Squad was engaged in an ongoing back-and-forth between Trump at the time, after the former president Tweeted a series of attacks against the Congresswomen, suggesting they “go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came.” He also alluded to the women being “communists” in remarks to reporters.

“As to whether or not they’re communists, I would think they might be. But this isn’t what our country is about,” Trump said. “Nevertheless, they’re free to leave if they want. If they want to leave, that’s fine. If they want to stay, that’s fine. But the people have to know. And politicians can’t be afraid to take them on.”

At the time of the verbal altercation between the former president and The Squad, Hannon saw remarks from Rep. Omar in response to Trump’s comments using profanity in doing so. Hannon claims to have become enraged by the comments, which led him to compose an email to Omar, in which he threatened her life.

The subject line of Hannon’s email to Omar read, “[You’re] dead, you radical Muslim,” and in the body of the email he threatened to shoot the Congresswomen who are part of The Squad “in the head.”

Hannon suggested Omar “better get more security, or within a week you and the other three radical rats will be six feet under.” He added, “All four of you will die and the American people will cheer! Patriots Against Islam!”

In an email to CNN, Hannon’s lawyer, Michael Perry, said, “However, Mr. Hannon has no hate for any of the members of Congress referenced in the email and has entered a plea of guilty to resolve the case with the Government. He is taking full responsibility for a single lapse of judgment which happened almost 3 years ago. He is not a threat to the Muslim community and carries no animosity towards them.”
