Report: Border Patrol apprehended nearly 200K migrants attempting to cross the southern border illegally in June
According to a new report published this week by Breitbart, US Customs and Border Patrol apprehended 192,000 people who attempted to illegally cross the US-Mexico border in June of 2022.
Breitbart says it has obtained government records related to border apprehensions, and upon reviewing the records determined agents at the southern border had arrested the large number of illegal border crossers – though the number of individuals apprehended in June did see a significant decrease from the previous month. May of 2022 saw a record 222,656 individuals arrested along the border.
The statistics come on the heels of the deadliest migrant incident in US history, in which 53 migrants died in a sweltering tractor trailer in Texas. The discovery has spurred fresh discussions on whether the White House is effectively handling border security.
Border arrests this fiscal year are already on track to surpass last year’s numbers with three months left to go. “With the nearly 192,000 migrants apprehended in June, Border Patrol agents marked more than 1.6 million migrants during Fiscal Year 22 (which began on October 1, 2021),” wrote Breitbart. “With four months to go in the year, the total apprehension of migrants by agents is approximately 20,000 shy of the record 1,659,206 apprehensions in FY2021.”
The Center for Immigration Studies called the large number of May arrests “shocking.” CIS Resident Fellow Andrew R. Arthur wrote last month that the high number “makes a sort of sad sense, because unlike every one of his predecessors, Biden isn’t attempting to deter illegal entrants — he is instead inviting asylum applications from any foreign national who can make it here.”
