NYC Mayor Eric Adams accuses Texas Gov. Greg Abbott of ‘manufacturing a crisis’ by busing migrants out-of-state

New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) on Sunday targeted Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) in a press conference after Abbott sent another bus of migrants to the state.

Adams held the conference at the Port Authority Bus Terminal as he greeted a bus carrying 14 migrants arriving from Texas. Adams accused the governor of using the migrants “as political pawns to manufacture a crisis.”

He also complained that Abbott wasn’t giving the city a heads-up as to when the migrants will be arriving. “They’re not letting us know when the buses are leaving. They’re not letting us know what are the needs of the people on the bus,” Adams said. “They are not giving us any information, so we’re unable to really provide the service to people en route.”

Adams said some of the migrants on the bus were unaware of where they were being sent and weren’t allowed to go to the location of their choosing.

“This is horrific when you think about what the governor is doing, the governor of Texas, after months of traveling across the border, placing them on the bus with no direction,” Adams said. “We’re finding that some of the families are on the bus that wanted to go to other locations, and they were not allowed to do so. They were forced on the bus with the understanding that they were going to other locations that they wanted to go to, and when they tried to explain they were not allowed to do so.”

According to a July report, it is estimated that, since the start of FY 2022, over 500,000 migrants have crossed the border into the US and were able to evade arrest. In FY 2021, that number was much lower, at 389,000.

As that number continues to rise, so do the deaths. In one of the most recent – and deadly – incidents of human trafficking, 53 migrants were found dead in June after being abandoned in the back of a tractor-trailer near San Antonio, Texas.

Abbott has now bused more than 5,100 migrants to Washington D.C. and about 100 migrants to New York. Abbott believes that by doing so, the Biden administration “will be able to more immediately address the needs of the people that they are allowing to come across our border.”

In late July, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser requested help from the National Guard after migrants began arriving in D.C. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin rejected her request on Friday.

“In addition to Washington, D.C., New York City is the ideal destination for these migrants, who can receive the abundance of city services and housing that Mayor Eric Adams has boasted about within the sanctuary city,” Abbott said Friday.

He said of Adams: “I hope he follows through on his promise of welcoming all migrants with open arms so that our overrun and overwhelmed border towns can find relief.”
