Speaker Pelosi says China is ‘one of the freest societies in the world’
Fresh off her trip from Asia, Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi touted that “China is one of the freest societies in the world, don’t take it from me, that’s from Freedom House, it’s a strong democracy, courageous people.”
Speaker Pelosi made headlines this week when she made remarks on NBC News saying, “We still support the ‘One China’ policy, we go there to acknowledge the status quo is what our policy is, there is nothing disruptive about that. It was only about saying, China is one of the freest societies in the world, don’t take it from me, that’s from Freedom House, it’s a strong democracy, courageous people.”
However, as The Post Millennial notes, China doesn’t even make Freedom House’s list as a free country. Instead, they called the nation an “authoritarian regime” which has “become increasingly repressive in recent years.”
Freedom House writes, “The ruling Chinese Communist Party (CCP) continues to tighten control over all aspects of life and governance, including the state bureaucracy, and civil society associations, and it has undermined an earlier series of modest rule-of-law reforms. The CCP leader and state president, Xi Jinping, has consolidated personal power to a degree not seen in China for decades. Human rights activists and lawyers continues to speak out, though at great personal cost.”
Speaker Pelosi also held Taiwan in high regards saying, “We want Taiwan to always have freedom with security and we’re not backing away from that.”’
