Trump calls McConnell a ‘pawn for the Democrats,’ says he must ‘immediately’ be replaced

Former President Donald Trump in a Wednesday post on Truth Social renewed his call for Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) to be ousted from his seat.

Trump wrote in the post: “The Democrats have Mitch McConnell and his lovely wife, Elaine ‘Coco’ Chao, over a barrel. He and she will never be prosecuted, as per the last paragraphs of this story, as long as he continues to give the Radical Left the Trillions and Trillions of Dollars that they constantly DEMAND. He was afraid to use the ‘Debt Ceiling Card’ in order to stop the most expensive waste of money in our Country’s history, to be spent on the Green New Deal, which will only cause one thing, a Depression.”

He continued, “These expenditures are something our Country can never recover from. Mitch McConnell is not an Opposition Leader, he is a pawn for the Democrats to get whatever they want. He is afraid of them, and will not do what has to be done. A new Republican Leader in the Senate should be picked immediately!”

Trump’s statement came in response to McConnell’s Thursday remarks in which he said that “there’s probably a greater likelihood the House flips than the Senate.” He added that “candidate quality has a lot to do with the outcome.”

Trump’s comments come only a week after he called McConnell a “broken down hack” for not doing enough to aid Republican candidates.

“Why do Republicans Senators allow a broken down hack politician, Mitch McConnell, to openly disparage hard working Republican candidates for the United States Senate,” Trump said last weekend. “This is such an affront to honor and to leadership. He should spend more time (and money!) helping them get elected, and less time helping his crazy wife and family get rich on China!”

Trump has been quite critical of McConnell throughout the years. In July of 2021, Trump called McConnell “a stupid person” for not eliminating the filibuster, which Democrats have continuously used to block Republican legislation. Later, in September, the Wall Street Journal reported that Trump was seeking to oust McConnell, who he called “very bad for the Republican Party.”

A July poll found that only 31 percent of McConnell’s constituents approved of the job he was doing, while 62 percent disapproved, per Newsweek. Trump took credit for this, saying at the time: “See what I can do to people?”
