Katie Hobbs wins tight race for Arizona governor against Kari Lake
Democratic nominee Katie Hobbs won Arizona’s gubernatorial, NBC News projected on Monday evening.
Hobbs, who is Arizona’s secretary of state, defeated Republican nominee Kari Lake, who is a former television news anchor and was endorsed by former President Donald Trump.
When the race was called, Hobbs had a total of 50.4% of the vote, in comparison to Lake’s 49.6%.
Hobbs refused to debate Lake during her campaign, saying that Lake was “only interested in creating a spectacle” and she didn’t want to give her a chance to spread conspiracy theories.
Lake hit back by calling Hobbs a “coward” for not debating.
“Democracy is worth the wait,” Hobbs said in a tweet after her victory was projected. “Thank you, Arizona. I am so honored and so proud to be your next Governor.”
Lake tweeted, “Arizonans know BS when they see it.”
Hobbs also issued a further statement on Monday saying, “I want to thank the voters for entrusting me with this immense responsibility. It is truly an honor of a lifetime, and I will do everything in my power to make you proud.”
“For the Arizonans who did not vote for me, I will work just as hard for you -because even in this moment of division, I believe there is so much more that connects us,” she said.
