Memorial Day: for our troops

The American flag. This Memorial day, remember one who fights for that flag and is now in a Mexican jail.

Many Americans celebrate Memorial Day in many ways, and many towns commemorate the day with a parade as tribute to both living and deceased veterans. This Memorial Day one veteran is celebrating Memorial Day in a Mexican jail. Will we honor his commitment to our country and the two tours he served in Afghanistan or will we go about our festivities without a thought to this patriot?

On March 31st, U.S. Marine Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi made the unfortunate mistake of crossing into Mexico by accident. Despite his attempts to communicate to the authorities immediately that this was an accident, the Sgt. was thrown into a Mexican jail. We have been told that the appropriate American diplomats have been pleading his case with the Mexican government, but if we care about the plight of this Marine, we need to face facts. Our “appropriate” American diplomats have proven historically to be as useless as _________ – well, you fill in the blank.

To make matters worse, Tahmooressi’s lawyer, Alejandro Osuna, stated: “The judge who is hearing the case in Tijuana is oblivious to the American media.” Well, if the judge is oblivious to the American media, perhaps he or those in authority over him will pay attention to the American people. So, this is going out to all those patriots who may have plans to vacation in Mexico this year, as well as to those who buy Mexican goods. It’s time we speak up on behalf of our own. Right now it’s Sgt. Tahmooressi, tomorrow – who knows, it may be your son or someone in your family. First, we have to realize that we are not helpless pawns of the elitists who do a lot of talking but get little accomplished. It’s long past time for a good old American boycott. Yes, America, I mean canceling those vacations plans you may have to visit Mexico this year. Remember, tourism is Mexico’s largest legal gross national product. Also, start reading the labels of where things are made – and if in Mexico, please put that item back on the shelf or back on the rack. It’s often been said that actions speak louder than words, so America, let’s make some noise and get this Marine returned to his family and country. AND – let’s make sure the Mexican Tourism Board knows what we’re doing.

An extra effort for this Memorial Day

Please send a letter to the Mexican Tourism Board telling them that any plans you had or may have been considering to travel to Mexico are being canceled until our Marine is returned. Also tell them that you will not be buying any products made in Mexico as well. While petitions are somewhat effective, piles of letters being dumped on someone in authority’s desk in Mexico may yield quicker and better results. How about it, America, observe Memorial Day this year in a unique and expressive way: defend a young man who has committed his life to defending us.

Letters can be sent to the address below. And please, take the time to send an email as well.

If the Mexican judge won’t hear us, and the Mexican authorities won’t hear us, and the Mexican ambassadors won’t hear us – perhaps the Mexican businessmen will. We say we appreciate the service of our veterans, now it’s time to show it.
