BLM activist threatens “bloodshed” if NYC Mayor Adams reinstates Anti-Crime police units
Black Lives Matter activist Hawk Newsome has promised “riots, fire, and bloodshed” if NYC’s mayor-elect Eric Adams reinstates the Anti-Crimes police unit.
Newsome made the remarks during a sit down meeting with Eric Adams at Brooklyn Borough Hall Wednesday night. About 600 officers worked in this unit against violent crimes before mayor De Blasio dismantled the unit after a rise in anti-police sentiment last summer. As the units were being withdrawn from serving NYC, the city saw homicide rates skyrocket from 319 in 2019 to 500 in 2020 alongside robberies nearly doubling from May of 2020 and May 2021.
As a former NYPD captain, Eric Adams pledged to reinstate the anti crimes unit. “We will shut the city down. We will shut down the City Hall, and we will give him hell and make it a nightmare,” Chivona Newsome, Hawk’s sister, stated.
Adams striked back at Hawks, saying BLM needs to be held accountable and not just make demands to authorities. “You’re on the ground: Stop the violence in my community. I’m holding you accountable,” Adams said, adding: “You need to be corrected” (Daily Mail). There is “no reason we cannot have both safe streets and racial justice in our city,” Adams said. “If black lives truly matter, then we must address violence in our communities while we address bias in policing. Yelling and not listening gets us nowhere.”
“If they think they are going back to the old ways of policing then we’re going to take to the streets again,” Newsome said, according to the New York Post. “There will be riots. There will be fire, and there will be bloodshed,” he warned. “We will be at his front door, we will be at Gracie Mansion, we will be in the streets, if he allows these police to abuse us,” Newsome said, responding to Adams. Newsome denied that he was “threatening anyone,” insisting his statement was a well said response to “aggressive oppression.”
