AOC says McCarthy is ‘working with his Ku-Klux-Klan caucus’ in targeting women of color
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) criticized House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R) on Wednesday for allegedly tolerating bigotry from members of his caucus against Democratic women of color.
“Kevin McCarthy is so desperate to be speaker that he is working with his Ku Klux Klan caucus to look aside & allow violent targeting of woc [women of color] members of Congress,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted. Ocasio-Cortez said that people don’t understand the scale, intensity and volume of threats targeting Omar, adding, “this cannot be ignored.”
“GOP are given freedom to incite without consequence,” the New York lawmaker wrote. “They don’t have to pay for the security required from their acts- we do. They make money off it.”
“While people toss out clichés like “we condemn all forms of racism & bigotry,” the fact is Islamophobia is far too often tolerated and ignored. Bigotry is not made unacceptable by what one says about it, it’s made acceptable based on whether there are consequences for it or not.” Ocasio-Cortez went onto say.
Ocasio-Cortez’s tweet was attached to a video of Omar sharing a death threat voicemail she had received. “We see you, sand [n-word] bitch,” the voicemail began. “We know what you are up to. You are all about taking over our country. Don’t worry. There are plenty who would love the opportunity to take you off the face of this f**king earth … You are f**king Muslim piece of sh*t. You are Jihadist … You will not live much longer, b*tch. I can almost guarantee you.”
Last Friday, Boebert tweeted a 41-word apology to the Muslim community for her remarks, calling the incident an “unnecessary distraction.” Then, on Monday, Boebert called Omar to discuss the matter. Omar hung up on Boebert after deciding the call was “unproductive,” Omar said on Monday.
