President Biden insists he and Senator Manchin will ‘get something done’ on Build Back Better
President Biden told reporters in a press briefing on Tuesday he still believes he and Senator Manchin can ‘get something done’ when it comes to the $2 trillion Build Back Better legislation.
The President appears to remain optimistic he can come to an agreement with West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin (D), who has been the White House’s biggest roadblock to getting the Build Back Better plan passed through Congress.
On Sunday, Manchin made a shocking announcement on Fox News that he would not be voting for the plan, delivering a possibly fatal setback to the President’s policy plan.
After weeks of negotiations, the plan seems to have hit a roadblock, as without Manchin’s support, Democrats do not have the votes needed to pass Build Back Better through the Senate. Manchin has cited both the cost of the bill and his opposition to continuing the Child Tax Credit, which is included in the plan.
When asked if he believed Senator Manchin had broken his word by halting negotiations, President Biden replied, “… you’ve heard me say this before: Some people think maybe I’m not Irish because I don’t hold a grudge.” Biden added later, before he left the room, “Senator Manchin and I are going to get something done.”
