Wichita man shoots two officers before turning gun on himself on Christmas Day
Wichita police responded to a domestic violence call on Christmas day, and upon entering the residence the suspect proceeded to fire his weapon, hitting two officers, before turning the gun on himself.
Police have identified the deceased as 24-year old Malik Rogers. In a statement, police say they responded to the call around 11:30am. The 22-year old female caller told officers the man had physically assaulted her repeatedly.
When officers entered the residence where Rogers lived with intent to arrest him on assault charges, the suspect resisted verbal encouragement to submit to arrest. He then resisted officers’ attempts to use a taser to restrain him, and Rogers got away and barricaded himself in a bathroom.
When officers forced entry into the bathroom, Rogers fired and shot one officer in the leg and a second in the arm. Rogers then shot himself after an hour of talking with a crisis negotiator and was found dead.
Both officers who were shot were taken to area hospitals and are expected to recover. Police Chief Gordon Ramsay described their injuries as serious but not life-threatening. Wichita Police say no officers fired any shots during the incident.
