McCarthy names Rep. Mike Turner ranking member of House Intelligence Committee
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) named Rep. Mike Turner (R-OH) ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee on Thursday.
The House Intelligence Committee oversees the US intelligence community. Turner will move into the position as Devin Nunes leaves Congress to serve as CEO of Trump Media and Technology Group. Turner’s appointment will be effective on New Year’s Day.
“Congressman Turner’s commitment to this country is unwavering,” McCarthy said in a statement. “Throughout his long tenure on the Intelligence Committee, Mike established himself as a national security leader and ardent supporter of truth.”
Turner has a reputation in Congress for reaching across the aisle to pass legislation, notably co-sponsoring a bill with Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) to reform the military’s procedures and response to sexual assault and other serious sexual crimes.
He has also been a vocal critic of former President Trump in the past, admonishing the former President in a 2019 hearing regarding allegations that Trump had attempted to ask Ukraine for help winning the 2020 election.
