FDA Commissioner Janet Woodcock says ‘most people’ will get COVID-19
In a Senate hearing on Tuesday, acting FDA Commissioner Janet Woodcock told the panel ‘most people’ will get infected with COVID-19.
Woodcock plainly expressed the current state of affairs regarding what she believes is ahead in the fight against the virus, saying, “I think it’s hard to process what’s actually happening right now, which is most people are going to get covid.”
She went on to emphasize the importance of being prepared for the inevitability that most people will eventually become infected with COVID-19.
“What we need to do is make sure the hospitals can still function, transportation, you know, other essential services are not disrupted while this happens,” she said. “I think after that will be a good time to reassess how we’re approaching this pandemic.”
Explaining her stance that it is more important to immediately keep these services up and running and then figure out what comes in the future, Woodcock added: “I think right now we need to focus on continuity of operations for hospitals and other essential services as this variant sweeps through the population. I don’t think that will last a really long time, but that’s where I think we are right now.”
This week, COVID-19 infections reached a record high, with about 1 in 60 Americans testing positive in the last seven days alone.
