Gym owner who defied New Jersey COVID-19 laws now running for House seat
The owner of a New Jersey gym who gained notoriety during the early stages of the COVID-19 lockdown for defying former governor Phil Murphy’s closure orders is now running for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Ian Smith, who owns Atilis Gym in Bellmawr, New Jersey, was sentenced just last week to one year of probation after being arrested in 2020 for repeatedly opening the doors to his gym in spite of state closure mandates at the beginning of the pandemic.
He now says he will be running to unseat Rep. Andy Kim (D-NJ) as US Representative for New Jersey’s third congressional district in the upcoming midterm elections.
Smith Tweeted his intention to run this weekend, writing, “This Thursday 2/3 I’ll be formally announcing my campaign for Congress in NJ CD-3 against @AndyKimNJ. I am truly excited to have the possibility to serve the people of NJ with a platform focused on liberty, small government, and America First policies.”
Smith joins Robert Healy Jr. in the race to oust Rep. Kim, who has served two terms in office as the district representative.
