Sen. Lindsey Graham says potential Biden SCOTUS pick is ‘fair-minded, highly gifted’
In an interview with CBS’ Face the Nation on Sunday, South Carolina GOP Senator Lindsey Graham gave high praise to one of President Biden’s potential Supreme Court nominees, South Carolina federal District Judge J. Michelle Childs.
The Senator told host Margaret Brennan this weekend, “I can’t think of a better person for President Biden to consider for the Supreme Court than Michelle Childs. She has wide support in our state. She’s considered to be a fair-minded, highly gifted jurist. She’s one of the most decent people I’ve ever met.”
The comments by Graham are not consistent with many in the GOP, who have spoken out harshly against President Biden’s pledge to nominate a Black woman to the Supreme Court.
On Tuesday, Senator Ted Cruz criticized Biden’s SCOTUS plans on his podcast, saying, “The fact that he is willing to make a promise at the outset that it must be a Black woman I’ve got to say that’s offensive.” He continued, “Black women are what, 6 percent of the U.S. population? He’s saying to 94 percent of Americans ‘I don’t give a damn about you, you are ineligible.”
GOP Senator Roger Wicker (Miss.) drew a sharp rebuke from the White House after saying putting a Black woman in the SCOTUS seat would make her a ‘beneficiary’ of affirmative action. The Biden administration responded by saying Biden’s decision to nominate a Black woman to the Supreme Court “is in line with the best traditions of both parties and our nation.”
