Representative Adam Kinzinger says GOP stands for ‘conspiracies and toxic tribalism’
Representative Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) criticized the GOP in a statement for “conspiracies and toxic tribalism.”
Kinzinger’s comments come after the Republican National Committee voted to advance a censure of Rep. Kinzinger and Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) for being involved in the committee investigating January 6.
According to Digital Colorado News, the two representatives were two of ten Republicans who voted in favor of Trump’s second impeachment.
The resolution, obtained by The Washington Post’s Josh Dawsey, said the two lawmakers have shown that they “support Democrat efforts to destroy President Trump” and have been involved in actions “not befitting Republican members of Congress” in their work on the Capitol attack committee.
Kinzinger tweeted a statement on Thursday in response to the resolution. He said that he has “been a member of the Republican Party long before Donald Trump entered the field.”
He added, “my values and core beliefs remain the same and have not wavered. Rather than focus their efforts on how to help the American people, my fellow Republicans have chosen to censure two lifelong Members of their party simply upholding their oaths of office.”
He continued saying that they have “allowed conspiracies and toxic tribalism” to “ hinder their ability to see clear-eyed.” Kinzinger announced that he will be seeking reelection in October. He stated he “will continue to be focused on standing up for truth.”
Rep. Cheney also took to Twitter to say, “The leaders of the Republican Party have made themselves willing hostages to a man who admits he tried to overturn a presidential election and suggest he would pardon Jan. 6 defendants.”
