United States COVID-19 deaths surpass 900,000, higher than any other nation
This week the United States’ coronavirus death total surpassed 900,000 people, the highest of any nation in the world.
As of Friday, Reuters reported 904,228 total deaths in the US since the start of the pandemic. In spite of the somber death toll, the United States and other countries globally are beginning to see a downturn in the number of daily infections and deaths.
The omicron surge appears to be waning and some health officials have predicted the end of the current surge may mark a turning point in the pandemic.
In January, Dr. Anthony Fauci told CNN the end of the omicron surge could end up downgrading the pandemic to an endemic, but only if the subsequent strains are less severe.
Some data also points to the US being hit harder by the omicron surge than other countries due to its aging population. Countries with overall younger populations fared better. The United States leads the world in overall COVID-19 deaths, but is 20th when it comes to infections per capita.
