Rep. AOC says Texas turning blue is inevitable
On Saturday, Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez told a crowd in Texas that the state will inevitably turn blue as she traveled to endorse two Congressional candidates ahead of the primary next month. Ocasio-Cortez has had mixed results when it comes to endorsing other candidates.
The representative was in San Antonio to show her support for the campaigns of Jessica Cisneros and Greg Casar. It was reported that Ocasio-Cortez told the crowd that Cisneros and Casar have her endorsement because they are in favor of Medicare for all and unions, as well as abortion access.
“Here’s what’s exciting about Jessica’s race and Greg’s race…is that if we flip Texas, we flip the country,” Ocasio-Cortez said to the crowd.
She continued, “Texas turning blue is inevitable. The only question is when. We are going to fight for a living wage, we are going to make sure we unionize the hell out of this state…and we’re going to make sure that not one dime is made exploitatively across any worker, especially the undocumented.”
Cisneros’ campaign is aimed at unseating the incumbent Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Texas, in the state’s 28th Congressional District. Casar is looking to grab House District 35.
Ocasio-Cortez is not the only politician to envision a world where Texas is lost by the Republican Party, and with that loss goes 38 electoral college votes. In September 2019, GOP Texas Sen. Ted Cruz said that the state would be a close call in the 2020 presidential election.
“If we lose Texas, it’s game over,” Cruz said at the time. “I don’t believe Texas will turn blue, but central to that is we’re going to have to work to communicate and turn people out.”
The Republican National Committee’s Texas communications director, Macarena Martinez, said that the RNC’s investment in Texas is the largest in the history of the organization.
