President Biden compares tension with Ukraine, Russia to World War II

President Joe Biden placed dark attention on the current Russia-Ukraine tensions. Biden compared the tension with Russia to that of World War II.

According to CNBC, Biden said “it would be the largest invasion since World War II.” His words reflect the growing concern among US intelligence officials and other experts. Additionally, the present situation is very different from the 2014 Russian annexation of Crimea. That situation was contained within Crimea itself and fighting only lasted about a month.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has been increasing military presence along the Ukrainian border for months. Currently, there are more than 100,000 Russian troops present.

Putin has insisted that this is protection for Russia as NATO expands its alliances. He does want Ukraine to join NATO. Biden has since pledged not to send US or NATO troops to Ukraine.

“It’s a little bit like reading tea leaves,” Biden said. “Ordinarily, with a different leader, the fact that he continues to build forces along Ukraine’s border from Belarus al the way around, you’d say, ‘well, that looks like he’s going to do something.”

Biden continued in his statement, “There will be enormous consequences if [Putin] were to go in and invade the entire country, or a lot less than that as well.”
