Gov. Gavin Newsom proposes relief for high California gas prices
California Governor Gavin Newsom announced this week he would be putting forth a proposal that would offer a tax rebate to taxpayers in the state to help curb the effects of record-high gas prices.
The plan, which was announced briefly during Newsom’s State of the Union address on Tuesday night, was not detailed by the governor, but a spokesperson for his office told KTLA75 the governor plans to have the bill introduced as soon as possible.
“The administration is developing a proposal that puts money directly in the pockets of Californians. It will take the form of a tax rebate,” the spokesperson said. “We are looking to move quickly on this. The Governor is focused on providing billions in relief to Californians who are suffering from rising gas prices across the country due to the ongoing situation in Russia.”
The announcement comes as gas prices reach a statewide average of $5.57 on Wednesday, and is expected to climb after the US oil sanctions on Russia.
