United States approaches 1 million COVID deaths on second anniversary of pandemic
Many recognize March 11, 2020 as the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic that has now continued for two years.
On this second anniversary of the initial spring 2020 quarantine period, in a few weeks the US will reach a record one million Covid-related deaths.
Johns Hopkins University calculates that more than 964,000 Americans have died of complications from COVID-19, and nearly 50,000 in the past 28 days (Johns Hopkins University of Medicine).
If this rate continues, the US is expected to surpass one million coronavirus deaths by the end of March 2022. According to Yahoo News, at the start of the pandemic 88% of Americans did not foresee the death toll to ever top 10,000. On April 19, 2020, President Trump said, “It looks like we’ll be at about a 60,000 mark.”
Shortly after he took office, President Biden commemorated the 500,000 Covid deaths in February 2021. “As we acknowledge the scale of this mass death in America, we remember each person and the life they lived,” Biden said. “They’re people we knew. They’re people we feel like we knew.”
Around that time, nearly a quarter (23 percent) of Americans said that a close friend or family member had died of COVID-19. As mask mandates are lifted in states nationwide, Americans have adjusted to life during the pandemic and changes in everyday living.
