United Nations blocks Russian resolutions on Ukraine humanitarian crisis
The United Nations Security Council voted to block a Russian resolution that outlined a growing humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, but failed to mention in any part of its language the cause of the crisis – the Russian invasion.
The Council voted to defeat the resolution with only China voting alongside Russia and the rest of the members voting against it. Only one of the other four permanent members of the Council needed to vote no in order to veto the resolution.
A similar South African resolution that also addressed the humanitarian issues in Ukraine also failed to mention the Russian invasion, and that resolution was also defeated.
In stark contrast, the United Nations on the same day it defeated the two Security Council resolutions, also considered another resolution naming Russia’s invasion as the cause of the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine. That resolution was drafted by Ukraine along with about 24 other countries, and co-signed by 100 U.N. member countries.
