President Joe Biden has told Barack Obama he will run for re-election in 2024, according to a report from the Hill.

The site cited two anonymous sources. One was quoted as saying Biden “wants to run and he’s clearly letting everyone know.”

The source continued, “I believe he thinks he’s the only one who can beat Trump. I don’t think he thinks there’s anyone in the Democratic Party who can beat Trump, and that’s the biggest factor.” It was not clear when Biden told Obama his plans, however Obama visited the White House earlier this month, to celebrate the Affordable Care Act.

Biden indicated last month during an overseas trip to Brussels that he would welcome the chance to run against Trump despite not committing to running.

“We’re a long way off in elections, a long way off,” Biden said. “My focus of any election is on making sure that we retain the House and the United States Senate so that I have the room to continue to do the things that I’ve been able to do in terms of grow the economy and deal in a rational way with American foreign policy and lead the world.”

“The next election, I’d be very fortunate if I had that same man running against me,” Biden went onto say.

Biden’s approval rating stands at just 41%, according to the RealClearPolitics average of recent polls, and a Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll published March 29 found Trump would beat Biden by 6 percentage points in a rematch of the 2020 election. The poll also found Trump would defeat Vice President Kamala Harris by an even wider margin of 11 percentage points.
