Fred Savage terminated from reboot of ‘The Wonder Years’ amid allegations of misconduct

Disney fired Fred Savage this week from his position as director and executive producer on the reboot of the hit 1998 TV show The Wonder Years, on which he was the lead actor, after allegations of misconduct on set.

“Recently, we were made aware of allegations of inappropriate conduct by Fred Savage, and as is policy, an investigation was launched. Upon its completion, the decision was made to terminate his employment as an executive producer and director of The Wonder Years,” said a spokesman for 20th Television to BuzzFeed News. 

While the specifics of the misconduct remain unclear, there are rumors of Savage having verbal outbursts and inappropriate behavior on set. 

The new allegations against Savage are not the first claim of his aggressive behavior on set. In 2018, YoungJoo Hwang, a costumer on the set of Savage’s Fox show The Grinder, accused him of aggressive and intimidating behavior, and creating a hostile work environment.

At the time, Savage responded to the allegations as “completely without merit and absolutely untrue,” according to CNN. “I cannot let these people in particular denigrate me while harming the message of thousands of women and others who have suffered and continue to suffer.” The suit was eventually settled out of court.

According to Deadline, who first broke the news of Savage’s firing, he was also sued in 1993 by costume designer on the set of the original Wonder Years show, Monique Long, saying he and co-star Jason Hervey sexually harassed her and made it difficult for her to complete her work. That suit was also settled out of court.

Savage’s representatives have not publicly commented on his departure from the reboot series, after he had already directed eight episodes of the first season of the reboot, including the pilot.
