Former Vice President Mike Pence teases possible presidential run against Trump in 2024
Former United States vice president Mike Pence hinted recently at a possible run against Donald Trump if the embattled former POTUS chooses to run again in 2024.
In an interview last month with the New York Times that was published this week, Pence did not shut down the idea of a potential bid for the GOP presidential nomination in the next general election.
Trump has yet to announce whether he officially plans to run or not, but Pence told the Times “We’ll go where we’re called. That’s the way Karen and I have always approached these things.” The former VP added he would be guided in his decision by “prayer.”
Pence and the former president have been publicly at odds with each other since the 2020 election, when Pence refused to endorse Trump’s claims about election fraud or seek to overturn the election results.
The Trump camp commented on the possibility of a Pence presidential run, saying the former vice president is “desperate” to chase his lost relevance, and that “Mike Pence was set to lose a governor’s race in 2016 before he was plucked up and his political career was salvaged.” He added, “The reality is, President Trump is already 82-3 with his endorsements, and there’s nothing stopping him from saving America in 2022 and beyond.”
Trump recently endorsed Pence’s brother, Greg Pence, in his congressional primary race in Indiana. The elder Pence went on to win the GOP nomination in the race to maintain his seat. Greg Pence will advance to the November election, where he will face off against Democrat Cynthia Wirth for the Congressional seat.
The former vice president has been traveling the country speaking at various events and fundraisers, reportedly stocking up a large sum for a potential campaign, but Pence has yet to officially announce his intentions.
