Maryland man arrested after threatening ‘mass violence’ at elementary school
Maryland police arrested a 46-year-old man on Wednesday after he reportedly threatened “mass violence” against an elementary school.
The Charles County Sheriff’s Office stated that the man was wanted “in connection with making several threats of mass violence,” NBC News reported.
The man had threatened to commit violent acts in calls to Gale-Bailey Elementary School in Marbury and a business in White Plains, the sheriff’s office said, adding, “The calls to the specific locations are related to people he knows and is believed to be domestic-related.”
“‘Out of an abundance of caution,’ extra officers will be at Gale-Bailey Elementary this week, the sheriff’s office said Tuesday evening,” NBC News noted.
The threats came on the same day an 18-year-old gunman killed 21 people at a Uvalde, Texas elementary school, including 19 children. In response, the Charles County Sheriff’s Office said it will increase its presence at area schools for the remainder of the school year.
After nearly an hour of police inactivity, a border patrol agent eventually broke into the classroom and killed the gunman, who used an AR-style rifle. Police had prevented parents from rushing into the school in an attempt to stop the shooting.
“Although there is no specific threat to our schools at this time, officers will be there to provide support, comfort, and security for our students and staff. We are with you all,” the sheriff’s office said.
New York Democrat Gov. Kathy Hochul called for legislation raising the age of purchasing certain types of firearms from 18 to 21 on Wednesday.
Former NBC News correspondent Luke Russert tweeted, “Should an 18-year-old be allowed to buy a gun but not a beer? One idea—do what the Feds did to get the drinking ag
