Oklahoma theater reverses course after posting sign warning viewers of same-sex kiss in ‘Lightyear’
A movie theater in Kingfisher, Oklahoma, reversed course after igniting some controversy after posting a sign warning customers of a “same-sex kissing scene” in Pixar’s new film “Lightyear.”
As reported by NBC News, the sign on the window of the 89er Theatre read, in part: “Attention Parents: The management of this theatre discovered after booking ‘Lightyear’ that there is a same-sex kissing scene within the first 30 minutes of the Pixar movie. We will do all we can to fast-forward through that scene, but it might not be exact.”
Since then, the movie theater’s owner told KOCO 5 that it would show “Lightyear” uninterrupted, adding that they took the sign down and never fast-forwarded through any showing.
Jill Stuever, a woman who took her two sons to see the Buzz Lightyear standalone movie, said she had no problem with the scene. “Watching it, it was no big deal,” Stuever said. “It was like two seconds. Maybe like one second if you were really paying attention.”
Lili Giles, who brought her 5-year-old to the movie, agreed. “I thought it was fine. I’m fine with all kinds of different families,” she said. But Giles said she also understood why the theater put up the sign in the first place, adding, “I think they just wanted to be honest with people.”
Oklahoma resident Patricia Kasbek, who said she saw the sign on social media, told NBC News that she had originally thought the sign was a joke but became outraged after finding out it was real. Kasbek said she then called the theater to leave a complaint but was sent to voicemail.
“I told them that it was completely insulting for them to censor a same-gender kiss when they’ve never done this to an opposite-gender kiss,” Kasbek said, calling the sign “cruel” and “bigoted.” She also vowed that she would “never see a movie at this theater while under this ownership.”
