A spokesperson for Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is accusing “news outlets” of “misrepresenting” a video of the House Speaker where, according to critics, she appeared to push the daughter of Rep. Maya Flores (R-TX).

The spokesperson explained that Pelosi was simply trying to nudge the little girl from her side to make sure she “wouldn’t be hidden.”

“It’s sad to see ‘news outlets’ that know better misrepresent the Speaker’s effort to ensure Rep. Flores’ daughters wouldn’t be hidden behind her in all of the photos of such an important moment for their family,” Pelosi’s deputy chief of staff, Drew Hammill, wrote on Twitter.

Hammill followed this up by tweeting a video showing Nancy Pelosi speaking with Flores’s children.

The incident occurred last week when Flores was being sworn in as a congresswoman. Flores is the newest House member on Tuesday after flipping Texas’s 34th Congressional District red. Flores’s recent election win made her the first Mexican-born congresswoman in American history.

Flores herself reacted to the video on Twitter. “No child should be pushed to the side for a photo op. PERIOD!!”

“I am so proud of my strong, beautiful daughter for not allowing this to faze her,” Flores added of the photo op. “She continued to smile and pose for the picture like a Queen.”

Conservative actor James Woods tweeted praise for Flores’s daughter. “I love this princess stood her ground, while Nancy showed her true colors,” he tweeted.

Conservative commentator Benny Johnson tweeted, “Nancy Pelosi ELBOWS the little daughter of new GOP Congresswoman Mayra Flores,” adding “what a witch.”
