Report: Democrats raised nearly $80 million in donations in the week following the overturning of Roe v. Wade
Democrat campaigns and other left-leaning organizations raised over $80 million in donations in the first week after the Supreme Court handed down a ruling that overturned the landmark Roe v Wade decision.
Pro-abortion activists and Democrat supporters flooded the coffers of major Democrat campaigns nationwide and political action committees that work to uphold the right to reproductive care in the United States.
ActBlue, the Democrats’ online fundraising platform, reported donors sent in over $20,000 in the first 24 hours after the Supreme Court announced their ruling on Dobbs v Jackson that threw out Roe. By the end of the work week the total amount Democrats raked in topped $80 million.
According to the Washington Post, officials have reported the majority of the donations going to large national organizations instead of state and local campaigns, which is where the most change is possible on the issue of abortion. The SCOTUS decision returned the responsibility of regulating abortion to the individual states.
New York state Sen. Andrea Stewart-Cousins (D) wrote this week encouraging donors to funnel their money into down-ballot races that will have the most effective impact on abortion laws. “We are entering a new chapter in American democracy where state officials must be prepared to step into a stronger leadership role for the nation, and serve as the last line of defense against these regressive trends on our freedoms,” she said.
The controversial Supreme Court decision has spurred a wave of activism nationwide, with protests taking place in cities across the country and outside the homes of Supreme Court justices who voted to overturn Roe. Democrat candidates hope to seize the financial opportunity ahead of the November midterms to get more blue voters to the polls.
