President Biden tests positive for COVID-19 but is ‘doing well’
President Joe Biden said Thursday that he tested positive for COVID-19, but added that symptoms are “mild” and he will be working in isolation at the White House.
Responding to his positive test, he said in a 20-second video on Twitter: “I guess you heard, this morning I tested positive for Covid. But I’ve been double vaccinated, double boosted. Symptoms are mild and I really appreciate your inquires and concerns. But I’m doing well, getting a lot of work done. Going to continue to get it done and in the meantime, thanks for your concern and keep the faith. It’s gonna be OK.”
While Biden, who is fully vaccinated, was unmasked in the clip, he said that the video was filmed by a masked and socially distanced videographer.
The White House chief of staff, Ron Klain, said in a memo obtained by CNN that Biden will be working over the phone and on video conference for the next few days. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre added that Biden has been taking Paxlovid to reduce the severity of the disease.
Biden’s physician, Dr. Kevin O’Connor, said in a letter that Biden had a runny nose and “fatigue, with an occasional dry cough, which started yesterday evening.” O’Connor added, “I anticipate that he will respond favorably [to Paxlovid] as most maximally protected patients do.”
First Lady Jill Biden told reporters after arriving in Detroit that she’d just spoken to her husband over the phone. She said “he’s doing fine” and is “feeling good.”
Biden will be turning 80 years old in four months, on November 20th. Many lawmakers wished him a quick recovery after hearing of his positive test.
Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) Tweeted: “@KelleyAshbyPaul and I send our thoughts and prayers to President Biden. We wish him a speedy recovery.”
Rep. Val Demings (D-FL) said, “Wishing President Biden a speedy recovery. With the vaccines and boosters, America can get through it. How well I know. Take care Mr. President.”
Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) also said on Twitter, Wishing President Biden a speedy recovery from COVID-19. Glad to hear his case is mild – an important reminder about why being vaccinated and boosted can help keep everyone safe. Feel better soon, @POTUS!”
