Donald Trump and Mike Pence to be in Washington at same time for first time since leaving office

Donald Trump and Mike Pence will be in Washington at the same time on Tuesday for the first time since Trump left office. Trump is scheduled to speak at an event hosted by the Conservative Political Action Conference, while Pence will appear at a separate event for the group later in the day.

It’s a potential preview of the 2024 presidential race, with both men eyeing a possible run. Trump has been increasingly critical of Pence in recent months, as the former vice president has sought to distance himself from Trump and his claims that the election was stolen from him.

Pence called on the Republican Party to stop looking backward in a speech last week, saying, “Elections are about the future.”

Trump is expected to echo his claims about the election in his speech on Tuesday and attack Pence for not doing more to stop the certification of Joe Biden’s victory.

The two men have been on different paths since leaving office, with Pence moving back to Indiana and Trump staying in Florida.

After stumping for opposing candidates in Arizona on Friday, the two men have been making competing public appearances lately. Their separate addresses occur as news breaks that Mike Pence’s former chief of staff, Marc Short, has given evidence before a federal grand jury investigating the Jan. 6, 2021 riot on the U.S. Capitol.

In his Saturday speech, Pence called for unity and said that “reconciliation is not a luxury, it’s a necessity.” “I truly believe that the best days for our country are ahead of us,” he said. “But unity does not mean uniformity. It means we’re all part of one American family.”
