Trump responds to poll showing McConnell’s low approval: ‘See what I can do to people?’
On Monday, Morning Consult released a poll, which showed that 31% of Kentucky voters approved of Mitch McConnell, whereas 62% disapproved. According to Morning Consult, on a state-by-state basis, this makes Mitch McConnell the least popular senator.
Trump took to his own social media platform Truth Social hours after the poll results were made public to both praise the news, and also claim responsibility for it. “See what I can do to people?” Trump wrote. “This was an easy one.”
A video of McConnell addressing the senate also aired at the January 6 committee. “The mob was fed lies. They were provoked by the president and other powerful people,” McConnell says in the video. “We’re not going to let these people keep us from finishing our business.”
Trump immediately took exception to McConnell’s comments and posted his thoughts on Truth Social. “Is this the same Mitch McConnell who was losing big in Kentucky, and came to the White House to BEG me for an Endorsement and help? Without me he would have lost in a landslide. A disloyal sleaze bag!” Trump said.
Trump has consistently lashed out at McConnell since leaving office. He has referred to McConnell as a “RINO,” meaning Republican In Name Only. Trump has also dubbed McConnell “Old Crow” or “Broken Old Crow,” according to Newsweek.
Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), who voted for Trump to be impeached after the capitol riots, did not suffer the same misfortune as McConnell in the poll. According to the poll, Murkowski enjoyed a 22% net improvement.
