Arizona House Speaker Rusty Bowers says he’ll never vote for Trump again
House Speaker Rusty Bowers (R-AZ) has firmly stated that he would never vote for Trump again. Bowers appeared on ABC’s “This Week,” where he said “I certainly don’t trust that authority that he would exercise.”
Bowers has been criticized by members from within his own party for testifying at the January 6 committee. According to Bowers, some called him a “traitor” after his appearance.
“If we want to base a party and an authority and move people to solve problems, you can’t base it on a lie. Ultimately, that falls apart,” he said.
Bowers feels the decision will be taken out of his hands as he said the country as a whole are bored of Trump. “I’ll never vote for him, but I won’t have to. Because I think America’s tired and there’s some absolutely forceful, qualified, morally defensible and upright people, and that’s what I want. That’s what I want in my party and that’s what I want to see.”
Bowes dubbed Trump a “demagogue” who keeps a strong grip of his supporter base through “thuggery and intimidation.”
“I have thought, at times, someone born how he was, raised how he was — he has no idea what a hard life is. And what people have to go through in real — in the real world. He has no idea what courage is,” Bowers said.
The recent comments made by Bowers differ to his stance in the past, as Bowers himself was a Trump supporter.
Bowers told the The Associated Press ahead of his testimony in June that he supported Trump in the 2020 election due to his contribution to the country pre-covid. “If he is the nominee, if he was up against Biden, I’d vote for him again. Simply because what he did the first time, before COVID, was so good for the county. In my view it was,” Bowers said at the time.
Bowers plans to run for Arizona’s state Senate in November’s midterms. Trump has endorsed his challenger, David Farnsworth.
“David Farnsworth will get rid of the stench of Rusty Bowers and his crew of RINOs who are systematically destroying everything that Arizona stands for,” Trump said when making the endorsement.
