Two House Democrats endorse Rep. Liz Cheney in Wyoming Republican primary
Liz Cheney (R-WY), who is currently trailing Harriet Hageman in the Wyoming Republican primary, has received support from across the aisle.
Two House Democrats, who are from New Jersey and Minnesota, are urging their own Wyoming party members to “consider” changing their affiliations ahead of the Republican primary on August 16 in order to back Liz Cheney.
In separate advertisements from a company called Wyomingites Defending Freedom And Democracy, Reps. Tom Malinowski and Dean Phillips urged Wyoming Democrats to “consider temporarily switching parties” in order to help get Liz Cheney over the line. Cheney is currently serving on the January 6 committee and has also been a vocal critic of former President Trump.
“Liz Cheney and I don’t agree on everything, but we’re on the same side today, fighting for our country,” Malinowski said in his ad. “Wyoming Democrats can put country over party too, by registering to vote for her in the Republican primary. I hope you do.”
Phillips said: “Principle must always come before politics. And nobody has shown more honor, integrity and courage than [Cheney].” He also went onto urge Democrats in Wyoming to consider switching parties.
The Wyomingites Defending Freedom And Democracy website notes that Wyoming voters can also change party affiliations at polling locations on the day of the primary or general election or when requesting an absentee ballot. Voters can also change back to their original party for future elections.
Cheney voted to impeach Trump last year after the January 6 insurrections. After the vote, Cheney lost her role as House Republican conference chair, NPR notes.
“If the cost of standing up for the Constitution is losing the House seat, then that’s a price I’m willing to pay,” Cheney told the New York Times. Cheney reportedly went onto describe the GOP as “very sick,” and said that it “is continuing to drive itself in a ditch and I think it’s going to take several cycles if it can be healed.”
