Democratic Rep. Carolyn Maloney says ‘off the record’ that President Biden is ‘not running again’
Rep. Carolyn Maloney said in an off-the-cuff remark that President Joe Biden “not running again” in 2024.
Maloney was being interviewed by the New York Times editorial board when she was asked by board member Eleanor Randolph, “Should there be term limits for members of Congress?” Maloney replied with a simple “No.”
“Should there be an age limit for members of Congress?” Randolph then proceeded to ask. Maloney replied: “Members of Congress have a term limit. It’s called an election every two years.”
When Maloney was pressed on whether Biden would seek a term, she said “Off the record, he’s not running again.”
Journalist Jyoti Thottam interjected: “Not off the record. On the record.” Maloney then replied by saying “On the record? No, he should not run again.”
Maloney did walk these comments back during a later interview with CNN. “If he decides to run, I’m supporting him. I’m supporting him and I don’t have other comment,” Maloney said. “I think that he’s done a terrific job and most recently the inflation reduction plan. There are so many good things in it for the economy and for people. And I’m supporting him if he runs. OK?”
Maloney’s name is on the ballot for the August 23rd Democratic Primary for New York’s 12th congressional district. She is running against Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Jerry Nadler and Suraj Patel, an attorney who narrowly lost to Maloney in 2020.
Nadler swerved any questions about Biden’s future by saying that the midterms must take priority. “Too early to say,” he said during a debate. “Doesn’t serve the purpose of the Democratic Party, to deal with that until after the midterms.”
Meanwhile Patel criticized his primary opponents in a tweet for their comments made about Biden. “Unlike @JerryNadler & @CarolynBMaloney, I’m literally the only candidate in this race, in a Democratic primary who didn’t snub Biden or throw @POTUS under the bus multiple times this campaign,” he tweeted. “It may not matter to the elite, but damn it energizes voters, especially of color.”
