Florida Democrat accuses Gov. DeSantis of breaking the law by using state funds to fly migrants from Texas
Florida Sen. Jason Pizzo (D) has lashed out a Governor Ron DeSantis, accusing him of breaking the law when he flew 50 migrants to Martha’s Vineyard.
Pizzo said that he plans to take DeSantis to court and that a legal challenge seeking an emergency injunction is “imminent.” Pizzo said he expects an answer by the end of the week.
Pizzo told CNN on Wednesday: “If we are able to get this in front of a man or a woman in a black robe, how the hell is the state going to contend any of these people are from Florida?”
DeSantis spokeswoman Taryn Fenske responded to Pizzo’s statement the following day and said, “Senator Pizzo never misses an opportunity for his 15 minutes of fame and is challenging an action on an appropriation he voted for.”
Fenske added: “The transportation of the immigrants to Martha’s Vineyard was done on a voluntary basis. The immigrants were homeless, hungry, and abandoned – and these activists didn’t care about them then. Florida’s program gave them a fresh start in a sanctuary state and these individuals opted to take advantage of chartered flights to Massachusetts.”
According to Politico, Florida spent $615,000 to fly the migrants to Martha’s Vineyard and plans to spend $950,000 for future travel arrangements.
Florida Democratic Party Chairman Manny Diaz also bashed DeSantis for his actions, calling him an “extremist, power-hungry opportunist bully.”
“There is nothing he will not do, no one he will not hurt in order to satisfy his ego,” Diaz said.
Democratic Congresswoman Debbie Mucarsel-Powell accused DeSantis of not dealing with more pressing issues.
“Not only are we facing higher levels of inflation here in Florida than other states. There’s an affordability crisis, but he wants to ban abortion without exception for rape and incest.”
Rep. Dotie Joseph accused DeSantis of displaying a lack of humanity.
“If you see a man coming across a river with his infant daughter and they’re willing to die on the way, know that something very wrong is going on at home. I don’t know one immigrant who comes here just for decoration,” Joseph said. “To leave everything that you know, all of your friends, all of your family, if everything was fine at home. We don’t come here for that, we come here seeking freedom and opportunity.”
