Poll: Three-quarters of college Democrats don’t want President Biden to run for reelection
Nearly three-quarters of college Democratic voters have said they don’t think President Joe Biden should run for re-election in 2024, according to an online NBC News/Generation Lab poll.
In the poll, 73% of these Democratic students, who attend either two- or four-year institutions, believe that Biden should step aside in two years, whereas 27% of those polled still believe he should run.
The NBC News/Generation Lab poll found that 42% of all incoming second-year college students say they are happy with the job Biden is doing as President, 2% of students polled said they strongly approve of Biden’s performance, while 57% disapprove of his performance as president.
In a similar poll, 43% of second-year college Republican voters said that former President Donald Trump should not consider another run for The White House, whereas 57% said he should run.
Those within the Democrat party also have their reservations about Biden running in 2024.
Democratic Rep. Dean Phillips of Minnesota said he didn’t want Biden to run in 2024, nothing that he would be 81 at the time.
“I think he’s a man of decency, of good principle, of compassion, of empathy, and of strength. But to answer your question directly, which I know is quite rare, uh no, I don’t,” Phillips said.
Rep. Angie Craig, who is also from Minnesota, shared a similar opinion: “I would say we need new leaders in Washington up and down the ballot in the Democratic Party.”
Rep. Tim Ryan, a Democratic running for Senate in Ohio, chimed in: “My hunch is that we need new leadership across the board – Democrats, Republicans, I think it’s time for a generational move”
Ryan added that “The President said from the very beginning he was going to be a bridge to the next generation, which is basically what I was saying.”
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi was also asked about Biden’s future. While she praised his performance, she refrained from commenting on whether he would run again.
“President Biden is the President of the United States. He did a great service to our country. He defeated Donald Trump, let’s not forget that. I’m not going into politics about whether the President should run or not,” she said.
