White House says Biden ‘intends’ to run in 2024, confirming reports by Rev. Al Sharpton
The White House responded on Tuesday to reports that President Biden had confided in Rev. Al Sharpton last month during a meeting that the president will run again in 2024, confirming Biden intends to seek a second term.
NBC reported on Monday that Sharpton had shared with his National Action Network staff after the private meeting with the president last month that he plans on running for another term in the next general election in two years.
A day later, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was asked by a reporter if Biden had told Sharpton he intended to run again. Jean-Pierre quickly confirmed that POTUS intends to seek another term, saying, “The president has said this himself: He intends to run in 2024.”
Jean-Pierre added, “As you know, I cannot weigh in on elections; I cannot speak to elections from here. We do — we do truly follow and try to follow the Hatch Act here. But I will just reiterate what the President has said many times, what I have said many times — is that the President intends to run.”
Last month, Vice President Kamala Harris said in an interview last month that she would “proudly” run on the Biden ticket again in 2024, but did not confirm whether the duo had officially decided to seek their second term in the White House.
No potential presidents have officially announced their candidacy for the 2024 race yet, though former president Donald Trump has repeatedly hinted at another run to serve another four years in the White House after a term out of office.
