Google approves Trump’s Truth Social app for Play Store

Google confirmed on Wednesday that they have given the green light for Truth Social to be downloaded in the Google Play Store. Truth Social is the social media app owned by former President Donald Trump.

Google had previously said Truth Social would not be available for download until Google was satisfied that Truth Social had adequate policies in place to addressed incitement and threats of violence. Google also added a further stipulation, saying that all apps on Google Play must provide a system within the app to report questionable content.

“Apps may be distributed on Google Play provided they comply with our developer guidelines,” a Google spokesperson said, “including the requirement to effectively moderate user-generated content and remove objectionable posts such as those that incite violence.”

Under Truth Social’s policies, user content that encourages violence “may result in” that content, or the account responsible for the content, being ejected from the platform.

Google released a statement to FOX Business stating that Truth Social has policies which meet Google’s criteria, and that they have agreed to enforce, which include removing violative content such as incitement to violence.

Axios was the first to report that Google had approved Truth Social.

Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG), which operates Truth Social released a statement confirming Truth Social’s availability.

“Truth Social is now open on all phones in the United States, which is a big accomplishment,” TMTG CEO Devin Nunes told FOX Business. “Not only do we have the most free speech platform but also a family-friendly platform.”

“It’s been a pleasure to work with Google, and we’re glad they helped us to finally bring Truth Social to all Americans, regardless of what device they use,” Nunes added.

Google confirmed that Android users can download Truth Social through its website, via sideloading and through other Android app stores. Android apps may not have the same level of moderation as those which can be downloaded from Google Play.

Samsung made Truth Social available for download in its galaxy app store last week.
