Jury finds Kevin Spacey not liable in sexual assault case brought by Anthony Rapp
The jury in Kevin Spacey’s sexual abuse trial found that the former actor is not liable for battery against Anthony Rapp.
Rapp testified that Spacey invited him to a party at his apartment while they were both working on Broadway back in the 1980s.
Rapp alleged that Spacey, who was 26 at the time, lured him into a bedroom after everyone had left and laid on top of him on a bed. Rapp said he was able to get out from underneath Spacey and escape.
The jury, which was made up of 6 men and 5 women, took about an hour and a half to reach their verdict.
Richard Steigman, who was part of Rapp’s legal team, said in a statement: “Anthony told his truth in court. While we respect the jury’s verdict, nothing changes that.”
In a statement posted on Twitter, Rapp wrote that he was “deeply grateful for the opportunity to have my case heard before a jury, and I thank the members of the jury for their service.”
“Bringing this lawsuit was always about shining a light, as part of the larger movement to stand up against all forms of sexual violence,” Rapp said, adding that they will continue to fight for “a world that is free from sexual violence of any kind.”
Spacey appeared relieved after the verdict was announced and then stood up to hug his lawyers.
“I’m very grateful to the jury for seeing through these false allegations,” Spacey’s attorney Jennifer Keller said outside the courthouse. Spacey left the courtroom and got into a black SUV without giving further comment.
Spacey’s lawyer, Jennifer Keller, said in a statement to Fox News Digital: “Mr. Spacey is grateful to live in a country where the citizens have a right to trial by impartial jurors who make their decision based on evidence and not rumor or social media.”
“He is deeply thankful to this particular jury. This was a highly educated group of six women and five men, all except one college graduate and most with graduate degrees. Their verdict was swift and decisive. Justice was done today,” Keller said.
