Oxford high school shooter Ethan Crumbley expected to plead guilty
Ethan Crumley, who killed 4 students, injuring 7 more, during a school shooting, will plead guilty to 24 separate charges, prosecutors have confirmed.
Ethan Crumbley, 16, is accused of opening fire in Oxford High School in what was the deadliest mass shooting in 2021. Crumbley used a gun his dad bought him as a Christmas present a few days earlier.
In January, Crumbley’s defense team stated in a court notice that they planned to raise an insanity defense, however they appear to have walked back on that one, according to Oakland County Chief Assistant Prosecutor David Williams.
Crumbley’s attorneys have not responded to any requests for clarification.
“We can confirm that the shooter is expected to plead guilty to all 24 charges, including terrorism and the prosecutor has notified the victims,” Williams said in a statement. “There have been no plea deals, no reductions and no sentencing agreements.”
Crumbley is expected to formally enter his guilty plea on Monday.
Crumbley’s charges include one count terrorism causing death and four counts of premeditated murder by a juvenile, according to the prosecutor.
A teacher reportedly saw Crumbley researching guns and bullets in class, a few days prior to the shooting, and school officials reached out to his parents, but they didn’t respond, according to prosecutors. His mom, Jennifer Crumbley, texted her son saying “lol, I’m not mad at you, you have to learn not to get caught,” according to prosecutors.
Prosecutors also alleged that hours before the shooting, a teacher saw a note on Ethan Crumbley’s desk which was “a drawing of a semi-automatic handgun pointing at the words, ‘The thoughts won’t stop, help me.’ In another section of the note was a drawing of a bullet with the following words above that bullet, ‘Blood everywhere.’”
Ethan Crumbley’s parents James and Jennifer Crumbley have been charged with involuntary manslaughter on the grounds that they could have done more to prevent the shooting.
