Rishi Sunak officially enters race to become new UK Prime Minister
Former Chancellor Rishi Sunak has officially entered the race to become the new UK Prime Minister.
Sunak made it to the last two participants in the previous race, but was eventually defeated by Liz Truss, who resigned after 44 days in charge.
Sunak announced his candidacy in a Tweet saying that the UK has “a profound economic crisis,” adding: “The choice our party makes now will decide whether the next generation of British people will have more opportunities than the last.”
“That’s why I am standing to be your next prime minister and leader of the Conservative Party. I want to fix our economy, unite our party and deliver for our country,” Sunak said.
To be eligible to enter the race, a candidate requires support from 100 MP’s. Sunak currently has support from 124.
The only other candidate to officially announce they are running is The Leader of The House of Commons, Penny Mordaunt. Mordaunt currently has the support of 23 MP’s.
Mordaunt told Sky News that the public need a leader who “understands the life they lead,” adding: “What this country needs is a fresh face, someone that can unite the Conservative Party and get things to work in this country.”
Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been heavily rumored to be making another bid to become Prime Minister, however Johnson has not officially announced this.
